We have recently had two new starters in the Orchard and both Harry and Chloe, our new account executives, are just starting out on their PR careers. We thought it would be good to catch up, one month in, and see what their first impressions were like of the industry, PR in the Channel Islands, and of course Orchard HQ!
Orchard News: So – why did you want to work in PR?
Harry: I wanted a job that was varied, challenging and that gave me the opportunity to write and communicate creatively. A career in PR offered me this and more, so I applied to do a PR degree at University and undertook a range of work experience. I knew an average 9-5 desk job just wasn’t for me.
Chloe: I always enjoyed writing at school and so was considering journalism as a career. I then did a management shadowing placement with a PR firm and although I had never really considered it before I had a really great week and decided to find out more. I worked in events during my gap year which really cemented the idea that PR was the career I wanted.
Orchard News: What has been your first impression of Orchard and PR in the Channel Islands?
Harry: My first impression of Orchard is that it’s always busy: phone calls, e-mails, meetings, photo shoots. Something exciting is always happening. The team have a range of clients with a range of PR needs which means no two days are ever the same, which I love.
Chloe: I love Orchard too – I have finally met people who love shoes as much as I do and It’s a great environment to work in; I love to be busy so I feel like I fit right in here. I was pleasantly surprised by the diversity of the clients we work for and the variety of tasks that need to be tackled each day.
Harry: PR in the Channel Islands is really interesting, in a good way. Even though Guernsey is a small island, the businesses and sectors that operate here are very varied, we don’t just work for the finance industry. Many businesses over here also have a presence in the UK and abroad which often need a different PR approach and means liaising with both the UK and trade media. Before starting my role at Orchard I didn’t realise how far reaching some their clients’ public relations campaigns were.
Orchard News: What is your biggest career ambition?
Chloe: Definitely to plan a future Royal wedding.
Harry: I plan to be the head of PR for a beauty, lifestyle, retail or fashion brand (Chanel, Tesco or Topshop. I’m not fussy.) To get involved in public affairs, maybe a leadership campaign, and then to eventually run my own PR agency.
Orchard News: What has been the best moment in your career so far?
Chloe: Probably having dinner round a table with the Speaker of the House of Jamaica, Speaker of the House of Representatives from India and the Secretary-General of the CPA on a beautiful, sunny day in Herm.
Harry: Mine was being offered my account executive role at Orchard PR, of course!
Orchard News: Tell us about your favourite recent news story and why you think it’s interesting?
Harry: It’s probably the News of the World phone-hacking story as it’s been going on for quite a while and the details keep getting juicier. Also, it’s been a bit of a PR disaster – but it is good as a PR case study of how NOT to handle a crisis.
Chloe: Did you know that Victoria Beckham is rumoured to be calling her new baby girl Santa? I love that. It’s weird what makes the news these days.
Orchard News: So what are your favourite websites for news and other stuff?
Chloe: I am an Open University student so I am on their websites a lot. I like the news pages there because they are interspersed with university stories about new research and discoveries.
Harry: I’m a big fan of reading the latest news headlines on twitter as it’s so convenient. I follow nearly all the local and national newspapers and news websites and they update so regularly, you always know what’s happening even without a newspaper or television in front of you. If a 140 character news stories can grab my attention then I usually read the whole news article on the website to get more details.
Orchard News: If you could be @’ed by anyone on twitter, who would it be?
Chloe: @henryholland, I love his tweets, he’s brilliant.
