You cannot overestimate the value of building strong client relationships.
Although I’ve worked in PR for over 30 years (including time in-house) I still appreciate I’m not too old to learn how to do things better. In our hectic world it’s all too easy to just get on with the job without taking time out to evaluate how relationships are working.
How often have you taken a brief, worked up a plan and launched head first into ‘the doing’ bombarding your client with a myriad of tasks at the same time. As consultants our role is to add value to our clients and to make their lives easier, not harder. Being honest and transparent is key to this relationship as well as managing expectations from both sides.
I think it’s very important to have a feedback loop, where you’re constantly thinking about what you’ve done and how you could be doing it better.

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying: “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time” and this is vital. Don’t give your client a whole elephant, instead take a breath, sit back and decide which things are the most important and what can wait and then chop your tasks up into small bite size pieces.
So 2018 for me comes with an audit of client relationships to see what’s working well, what’s not working so well and looking at how to change things to achieve the best results.
